Title: Open Silicon Photonics for AI Systems: Extending the MHS Platform Contract

Abstract: Next gen AI systems require extreme throughput thus bringing silicon photonics into OCP server platforms. This shift affects escape geometry, faceplate envelopes, internal fiber routing, optical distribution, power delivery, thermal design, and management visibility when optical engines leave the pluggable cage. We present the Open Silicon Photonics for AI Systems architecture vision, being developed collaboratively in OCP’s MHS as a workstream. We introduce a vendor-neutral architecture for front-panel, near-package, and co-packaged optics, and define the MHS tray contract for each class across five dimensions: mechanical, power, high-speed signaling, thermal, and management. Rather than prescribing optical engine implementations, the work keeps the server platform open, interoperable, and ready for multiple silicon photonics approaches. Attendees will learn what a photonics-ready MHS tray must provide, how this extends DC-MHS, and how to participate as specifications mature.

Title: High-Speed Open Silicon Photonics Reference Designs

Abstract: As AI workloads push bandwidth, power, and integration limits, co-packaged optics (CPO) is emerging as a critical architecture, but ecosystem alignment remains a challenge. Open Silicon Photonics reference designs are critical to enable interoperability and accelerate adoption across the OCP community.

In this session, Flex and Lightmatter will present results from a test vehicle built to verify high-speed Open Silicon Architectures for CPO. The test vehicle enables modular architectures with optical engines and laser sources to configure a variety of systems.

We will share experimental validation and testing of passive alignment, connector and optical path testing, and system integration. These findings highlight the growing need for similar reference designs dedicated to specific features—like optical, electrical, and mechanical—to improve cross-supply chain collaboration and reduce integration risk.
